I think this is a very promising shot (prefer the dark version) but there is something strange about the cigarette - is it cloned in? To my eye it's distracting and looks somehow stuck on. Would love to see it without the ciggie.

put up the original (only cropped the same way and resized) for comparison about the cigarette

I like it Koen, though I'm not too sure if the shadows on his face hold up as well in the version with the background cloned out. (In V3 the light and shadows look natural because of the inclusion of his environment.) Also, in V1 there's a little rim of light on his left shoulder that also seems to fit in better when the background is included. I prefer V3, but with maybe a bit more contrast, though I really do like the processing you've done on his skin in V1.

EDIT: Sorry - just re-reading my comment and it comes over as being quite negative - didn't mean it to.

Hi Koen, I've had a play with a mod of this (there is more to be extracted for greater effect I think) it's a cracking image

oufff... back online. My daughter had decided on watching Ratatouille, so less important things had to make way. More important things too Sad
No problems with you giving your opinion Geraint. No need to apologize either. I went for this look as I had already done the other. Had I done the same it would have been basically the same photo, just with a slightly different expression. Just wanted to try it without the bg showing (or hardly, some detail still should be visible). Personally I do like the result. Allthough yesterday I was a bit disappointed with all 4 photos of him - probably because the results weren't what I was aiming for - I'm very comfortable with all 4 of them now, probably because that 'what I was aiming for' feeling has disappeared and it's just the photos now.
Thanks for the reactions peeps. Nicolas, I can't turn the mod mode on anymore Sad
Perhaps send it by e-mail ? I can put it up as a version

Koen, - the V1 does look a little odd on the face (and perhaps ciggie) when viewed on my laptop.

The cig looks natural in V3, but perhaps is hasnt stood up well to the toning applied to the skin?

But,,, its a laptop, I will check it on my monitor at home.

I really like the composition and subject, and 90% of the processing. On my laptop, where I do a lot of my browsing, I find the remaining detail a little distracting. Having said that, it gets a good vote from me. Maybe worth a little more work before you print this?

talk about confusing good with popular. Looks like I confused good with lead and popular with balloon Wink

Aha! Seeing the original, the light on the cigarette makes sense. With the original background included the cigarette fits in. I'd suggest cloning it out altogether for use with the other effects -but the more I look at it the more I love the original! There is some context there and to me, that makes it stronger Smile

Well Koen, I agree with some others that the cig is distracting. It seems to block part of the face. But it is a minor point because the rest is awesome! You brought out great detail in #1 without it looking phoney. Nothing new from me this week, just too busy, but I had to take a quick browse. Ahhhh... I feel better now!

The first version is definitely my favorite purely based on the skin tones.
