The square format works too.
Amelie does continue to capture the viewer regardless of the shape of the frame.
Great use of black & white, almost in the literal sense as the dress and background are black and lack detail, and so all the focus is on Amelie's face, which in comparison is pale and owing to her youth lacks detail (i.e. Wrinkles).
The look goes well with that.

I always liked how her clothes were almost perfect symmetrical Robert. thanks for the comment

Quote:Attitude, the right word. It can mean teenage petulance, here it means independence plus je-m'en-foutisme. She might stick her tongue out at us. Square is also right, it balances so comfortably.
Quote:Attitude, and the confidence that comes with being that age. They know it all, but have learned so little.
If I remember right, she was in her twenties. It's all pose on demand really. Although, the confidence was already there, the attitude was pose. The cig was just used as a prop. She wasn't a smoker. She was - apart from beautiful - also very intelligent, and seemed very well in control of all aspects of her life.

Quote:I like the square format and the B&W processing, but most of all I like the attitude, that scowl, and thats what earns this my GEA.
Thanks for the GEA Alan

oh, and the title is just a little word play on the fact that the photo format isn't exactly square. But couldn't be bothered to start cropping 1 or 2 pixels

It's the direct stare that's so captivating. It's a look that unashamedly says "This is me, deal with it!". Which is kind of ironic when you think she's not a smoker, and the cig is a prop. In a world where so many people pretend to be something they're not, this works beautifully because of that. As said above, the fact that the blacks aren't quite black adds to all that as well. Cool image

Thanks for the response my comment.
I was commenting on the role as played by the model, not on the model herself. She may well be older than a teenager, a non-smoker, highly intelligent, but that is not the person she is showing the world in front of the camera here. That shows she is a good model, able to adapt to roles, show us who she is not.

Thanks Malc for hopping back in
And Tanya and John, for the insight and the UA. To be honest John, I think almost every crop, or the original which is in my profile, and which I wanted to upload first, works well. portrait format, square or even a landscape crop. Could leave it as it was, or crop through the hair for a square, or even crop above the eyebrows for a landscape. I decided for the square crop because it allowed me to have her bigger in the frame/on the screen
