Hover Bover

By kel55
Hi all found this DEAD hover fly on window sill this morning , on the sick at moment with a knee problem so been playing around with this shot today. Took about 8 shots using reverse ring and off camera flash mounted directly above and used touch at the front to light up the lower side . Quite happy with the result but dont think much of the focus stacking program i,m using (its zp combine internet free ) might be expecting too much but any advise on a better program would be great , thanks for tacking a look , Kel

Can't advise on the stacking issue, Kel!
I do like this image, though - sharp and well detailed - well done!
The detail of, and the way Mother Nature has 'designed' the eyes is wonderful!
Regards,
Richard

8 Shots IMHO isn't enough, especially using a reverse ring set up, I'd had been looking at 20-30 separate images in a subject as close as this......
Try using the trial version of Zerene and see how you get on with that. I personally swear by it and have used most of the stacking programs over the last few years. The full version isn't cheap coming in at around 60, but the trial version gives full functionality for 30 days by which time you should have learned it thoroughly and decided whether you can justify the cost. I've got some images in my p/f which will give some idea of what you can do with if you care to look.
It might be wise to invest in a focus rail of some description if you haven't done so already......Great effort all the same! Good luck and keep learning....

Well I think it is astonishing. It's just a shame that the insect has to be half dead or dead to achieve this technique.

Good shot.
Another program which is quite good and free is Helicon focus.
Like Ade say's you do need a lot more images to get a good final image.
