Thames Patrol

By derekhansen
Let me say straight off that I am not particularly interested in boats. In fact this was a shot borne out of frustration at not being able to get what I wanted. Those of you who have seen my PF (subtle plug) will know that I have a certain fascination with a jetty that looks across the Thames at Gravesend. I was standing on said jetty this particular evening waiting to get an image looking down its length towards Tilbury Power Station. The problem was that most of Gravesends rowing club were also on the jetty which was preventing me from taking advantage of some of the most glorious evening light I had witnessed with camera in hand (or on tripod in this case) for some time. So what to do? The answer was swing the camera 180 degrees to the left and look for a focal point to accompany the sunset. Bingo! One sunset with boat. Not a sailing ship or Thames barge unfortunately but the HM customs patrol boat. Still any port (or mooring) in a storm..

An image of two halves Derek, one of beauty and one of security...

Like the write up, Derek, but you don't need a plug, the image itself should encourage further investigation. Lovely light and glossy reflection. The image has shades of a modern day Turner Smile

You are right Les. I think I took around 5 shots in total that evening but got chatting to a fellow togger and spent over an hour just enjoying the light.

That rippled reflected sky is superb and I think probably stronger than the sky itself, the patch of blue leads across the water very effectively.

That's the name of the game that we're in Derek and even though we know it, the frustration is none the less. On a positive came away with a decent image Wink

It is frustrating when you made all the effort and not able to get the shot you had planned, but this is lovely shot with superb evening light.
Thanks for the UA.

The light last Sunday evening was simply stunning - where was I? Behind the wheel on the M4 with no chance of stopping - doh!
Glad you made great use of the stunning conditions, Derek

Well, if this was a fall back, I'd loved to have seen what you planned to shoot! Wonderful light and colour Derek.
