Battle Weary Tommy

Battle Weary TommyLovely gritty shot, but I am afraid that for me, the pic doesn't tell the story of the title. He isn't weary. There isn't that strain on the face that says this trooper has been on ops for the last xx hours or so. There is no dirt, no set to the shoulders, no shadows under the eyes from sleepless nights on sentry and dawn stand to.

Always a very difficult on re-enactments, because at the end of the day its a game. And being on the border in NI, or patrolling in Iraq or a 6 week patrol in the jungles of Malaysia is not.

Its a wonderful detailed shot, wonderful - but, I cannot relate to it in the way that I can to some of those of much lower quality from Vietnam.

Sunset at the Reservoir

Sunset at the ReservoirI always love this type of shot, and I've enjoyed looking at this one too, but it is very difficult to get the exposure right without some kind of trickery - either a graduated grey filter (ND grad) or to take 2 shots at different exposures (one for the highlights one for the darks) on tripod and then blend them in a photo editing program, or to clone in some burned out detail.

The problem is the the highlights have burned out to a pure white, and while you can live with a little of that - specular highlights, here I'd suggest its a bit too much. The forecast is good for tomorrow - go experiment. Try a touch later when the sun is not so bright if you don't have the grads.

Potentially a very nice shot and if you can get the exposure a touch better sorted, it will transform it. Everyone hits this problem because as you survey a scene one's eye adapts as you go round. The camera (or its sensor) has a fixed range of brightness, and you have to resort to dodges to get the brighness range into that which the system will accomodate.

Anywhere Else...

Anywhere Else...Can't we all sympathise! (Younger sisters school prize days spring to mind!).

I have to say I disagree about closing in the crop. Its not a portrait - its a reportage shot. To make sense the child has to be in context, so to make the story it needs to show everybody else having a good time, and the child bored witless....For me it works because the child and the slightly out of focus hands clapping are on the diagonal. The background puts it in context, and that's why we can relate to her situation.

I have a suspicion that a tighter crop would turn it into another shot of any old bored child which has no further appeal.

anyway, that is my logic.

And its a great shot.

DenialExcellent idea - to me its a real misery making, bleak pic which I guess its supposed to be! However, for some reason I can't make myself be really happy with the crop?

Does that dark area at the bottom really contribute? I suspect not, because it removes emphasis form the ladder. Chop it off and the ladder and the remoteness of it dominates a bit better. And you end up looking more down and less centrally - for me anyway.

Yendi - CS3 help!Clone out the worst bits, of which there are not many, then make a crude selection around the model with feathered edges and put it on a layer. Apply gaussian blur to the layer and adjust the opacity to suit? If you are cloning on a selection layer with feathered edges don't forget to lock transparent pixels, or you might drop a bit of cloning onto bits you don't want

Another alternative is to use the Martin Evening book masking against a light background using one channel technique, and put her against any background you like - its specifically designed for masking complex shapes like hair, and it is very very effective - simple to do in steps, but quite involved. Worth it though and far better than all this selecting using wands etc, because it is so accurate.

If you want to adjust the background alone, make a copy, set the background to any level of white or grey or gradient you want, and then use technique above to mask out model and import the model back from the original onto the altered background.

You certainly used a lot of DOF, which hasn't helped you?

also you have a RAW - do two developments, one of the background one for the model, and use shift move to drop the lighter onto the darker. Create a layer mask - reveal all and start spraying black! So you have lots of choices and any combination is going to sort it out for you.

Not got the book by Martin Evening Adobe Photoshop 3CS3 for Photographers? Best 30 one can ever spend as a PS user.Hope that is of some help.
