the Road to Reason

By MichaelBilottaPhotography
This one is rather direct in its meaning, but it also bears a more personal connection to me, as it is depicting a man wounded and slightly damaged by the myths and machinations of the Catholic Faith, and slowly but surely heading away from it, towards a more enlightened path, free of the icons and symbols of guilt and martyrdom that hold sway over the lives of others.

I added the wind-up key in him as a symbol for the drive we all have towards reason and rational thinking, as sensual and linear beings, we cannot, if we are honest with ourselves, maintain the belief in magic and superstition in any real way. The scarf on the head pertains partly to being blinded by the faith he is leaving, but also a nod to surrealist Rene Magritte. The strings at his feet are either the ties to religion that will always connect him to it, or something pulling him back, perhaps doubt and a need to keep the ties to the comfort in believing in divinity and immortality through salvation.
