The Defiant Defender

By miggeymouse
Knelt at his post, at the entrance to The Guildhall Square Cenotaph, Portsmouth. He is defending the names of those who are resting, defiant against the enemy.

Lovely photo. It took a three man team to operate the 'Vickers' machine gun, One to fire it, one to feed the ammunition belt and one to change the water can over as it was a water-cooled machine-gun. Still in service into the 1960's I was shown a demonstration in the drill hall of the 1st Bn London Scottish in 1963.
