I first of all took the photo in RAW (Coour). I desaturated it in the RAW converter and boosted the contrast. The next stage was to add a texture (peeled Paint) to the background. Finally, to add a little more clout, using a vignette effect I darkened the edges. The whole process was done in Photoshop.

I like the contrasty mono treatment, that has been done well. However there's a definite line around the head and shoulders, and it would have been more acceptable and most lilely unnoticed just feathering into the dark edge of the subject. I'm guessing the background was originally plain, as a textured background does go better with this.
