Soudley Woods ,Forest of Dean

By mikewatson
This photo was taken recently at Soudley Woods in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.
The original is in colour but it was a very bland dull day, so I experimented interpreting it in black and white.
It was taken on my Nikon D80 using a Sigma 17-70 mm lens, settings of F8 1/80sec ISO 400 at focal length of 28mm, obviously on a tripod.

I think it creates a very mysterious feeling and atmosphere.

This is the critique section, just as a reminder, so you wont have votes on the shot.

Its nice overall, but for me its not really conveying a sense of mystery. Some mist or fog when the image iss taken in the early morning may do a better job if your intent is mysterious.

I would like to see some more contrast, - its mainly white and grey, and the large bright area top left can draw the eye as a focal point.

Ive loaded 2 mods, - one is the original with added contrast, and a slight crop from the right, the second removing the bright area completely to show only trees, within a larger frame.

Hope this is helpful

I note the point about the bright area and agree the cropped version avoids the eye being drawn to it.
Thanks for the critique
