Autumn Symmetry

By Miles Herbert
Not sure about this, maybe too central or too dark? Comments appreciated.

This was taken at Manningford Trout Fishery on the River Avon last tuesday...which was just about the only nice day we've had recently. Took my son fishing as his little half-term treat, and this was the sight as the sun rose behind us.

Cokin 81B, Cokin Circ Pol and Hitech 0.6 ND grad.

Beautiful image but I think you may have overdone the ND grad a little.

The clouds shapes create an effective motion blur or flare! - appealing - nice shot - not to dark at all

Lovely shot Miles. A touch of cw rotation might strengthen it perhaps? Well done, beautiful colours and reflection.

Lol, thanks for the comments, yes, sorry Eric, this a fairly rough and ready version just to get peoples reactions to it, it could probably do with a little correction there...no excuses 'cept it's a lazy friday infront of the PC.

Just slighty, slighty underexposed (very minor, however), but what an amazing image! Amazing color and the reflections are divine. Click.

Miles,

Do you find foliage photos a bugger when sharpening? I want to sharpen up my pictures, but the leaves start to look all bitty and horrible when I do. Maybe Im not setting the sharpening properly. I just find that little leaves, once sharpened look terrible.

The other thing I was going to say is have you noticed how difficult it is to accurately expose in autumn conditions. My shots from holiday are a right mismatch of exposures. Some way under, some way over - I feel like a right beginner :-O

Anyway, as for your shot, its got nice warm colours and a nice reflection. I think the sky on the top left could do with a tad of brightening up. But thats all.

Cheers,
Adam.

Thanks Adam, thats another of the joys of shooting RAW digital, minor adjustments in exposure are so easy using layers in PS. For example I can expose 1 version for a lighter sky, another for the foliage, another for the foreground, and just blend them in together for a seamless correction.

You are so right about foliage... sigh...it is a right bugger to get looking good.

Have just got a 17 inch TFT screen on the PC to replace my old 19 CRT, and the difference is amazing. The colour range and contrast on this one seem so much better, which means you really can see into all the nooks and crannies of the image. Takes a little getting used to, but I love the contrast range now.

Sorry to hear about you 70 - 300 woes, but hope you still had a good holiday out there and look forward to the photos!

It works extremely well for me Miles. Exposure looks fine to me. The sky looks extremely polarised and whether you like it or not is down to personal taste. For me, it looks a touch unnatural. Fine shot nevertheless.

Great photo. I like the way the dark areas at top and bottom focus you in to the subject but feel it maybe a little too much ?
Anyway love it

I like this one Miles. I think the exposure is just right, except maybe for that top left hand corner of the sky. Colours are terrific.

It works well for me Miles. I love the cloud reflections and my eye doesn't mind it being too central. I love the light and colours too.

My manual tells me that digi cameras won't accurately focus on soft images - leaves included.
