Dorset Hills

By Miles Herbert
Went looking for a sunset last night, and as we went further west, so the clouds became more broken with just the off rain showers. This was taken just west of Bridport, where, as the sun went down the sky was lit with the most incredible pink and red tones.

Filters used, 81b, cokin grey grad to keep the sky and colour in.

Would be most grateful if anyone knows the name of this hill?

Hi Miles, Its called Colmer's Hill and youve captured it very well indeed. Whenever I drive by here I always want to take a photo but the conditions are never right. I nearly had my chance last Friday while driving down to Devon. This part of Dorset was layered in mist, so as the sun was going down I raced towards this hill. But when I got there the light wasnt great and by the time I would have found a vantage point it would have gone completely.

Your shot is as good as a picture of this place that I have yet seen.

Yes, very well done. I spotted this hill too when I was driving through Dorset last weekend. You've done a great job of capturing it.

Thank you for all the comments, and thank you Adam for supplying the name of this location!. This was taken looking North from the main A35, where there is a very handy little car park to view this hill from, so the colour in the cloud is the sunset reflected from where the sun was behind a hill to the west.

Great capture. Strange but the landscape does not appear to reflected the sky. This must be because the light effect on the landscape must be on the other side of that hill I guess. Beautiful image. That would be right very low light angle. John

This seems to be a very popular hill, when I read the comments above. Funny - I recognize it too! I took some pictures there a few weeks ago, but wasns satisfied with the result. You seemed to have your timing exactly right, and managed to catch a great sky and fantastic colours. Congratulations!

It's a nice shot but I feel that because of the filter the sky looks a bit false in comparison to the forground.

Wonderful shot Miles, know Colmers hill well, my wife is from Bridport...I remember sitting up there a few years ago reading the instruction book for my EOS 5, trying to get it to work...

Regards Nigel.

Thank you for the kind comments.

Adam...LOL... the F80 was out of film and I've forgotten how to load it, all that fiddling about with leaders and sprockets...sigh. Cokin filters were deliberate to make use of their slight magenta tint...the ones I took with the Hitech filters, which are true neutral, weren't as good.
