Wow, Miles I am impressed. This is perfect -fantastic lighting, composition and detail. It serves me right for taking the mickey out of you for not having a macro lens!!!
One question though - I thought mushrooms weren't your thing?!!

Matt... the background is (whispers) a folding reflector with the black side pointing slightly down to minimise reflections off the creases

a very nice shot indeed. The BG works well, though i can't help finding my self wishing that you could see a bit more of the log to the left of the 'shrooms, so the diagonal line continues to the frames edge.. still that's a very minor niggle.

Great stuff and a well deserved EC.

I'm not as enthusiastic about fungi as the average epzer, but I do like sci-fi, and the white folds and ribs in this look like something from Farscape or Star Track - lovely composition, very delicate.
