Hi Emma, thatís a great shot for your first studio attempt. Its a very interesting pose. I thought it would be nice to see it in b+W - Black and white helps you see shapes and shadows without the distraction of colour. As the pose is about shapes its worth considering so I have uploaded a mod for you - a border helps keep the viewer focused on the image. Great shot as it is good luck with your hnd. Wayne

A few thoughts on the upload. I think the crop needed to allow more at the bottom as it seems like it is not quite balanced as an image without a little more space.

I also don't think the pose is flattering, particularly with the armpits exposed. The lighting is good, and well exposed and balanced in its tone and colour. Try experimenting with as much different lighting methods as possible, as I am sure you will be on your course.

The best photographers use lighting to add drama, or mood to an image. This takes a little time to master.

I have always used my knowledge of the great master painters in my photography work. I find this can be of some inspiration too, not just photographers as a source of inspiration.

Also have a look at the Strobist site for a few good tips : Strobist. I have also got a few good PDFs on portraiture, just mail me if you want them.

I hope that is of some help.

I agree with Nick on this one.
