Grateful thanks to all those who voted, commented, gave their awards or put up mods to Up On The Downs. All much appreciated.
This handsome woodpecker popped into the garden the other morning and I thought, no point in going upstairs for the camera, I'd have to change lenses anyway, and it will only stay a few moments, as woodpeckers are so nervous. Five minutes later, it was still there, tucking in to all sorts of things on and around the lawn. So I rushed for the camera, and Woody very kindly stayed around and posed quite nicely.

Green Woodpecker, native here in Epping Forest. They love ants and this is probably what it was doing with it's sticky tongue !! beneath your lawn !! Good image of this our largest Woodpecker.

Great shot of a beautiful bird, Allan. Only ever seen one in the flesh locally - don't think they're all that common in Scotland, for whatever reason.
