Things of beauty

By Mirjam
From the oldish (300 odd years is not that old Wink) to the new. In the Netherlands, they tend to call them windmills, but I think that wind turbine is a better name, as they generate energy for the sake of energy, not to mill vegetable matter or water. When I left the Netherlands in 1985, there were no wind turbines. They started to be ‘planted’ in 1986, so I do not really have a feel for the level of opposition to them. However, in some provinces of the Netherlands, there are now so many, that you can’t turn your butt without bumping into whole hordes of them. They are literally everywhere. Most of them on land, increasingly also ‘on’ water. My feeling is that opposition is either not that great or the Dutch government has turned into a dictatorship Smile. Personally, I love them. They are stark, they are sleek, they are beautiful, they are functional and they give us all what we want most: energy; renewable energy at that. And yes, there will be those of you who will have counter arguments, but I will not go into them here.
These ones are just off-shore in the IJsselmeer (Lake IJssel) at Medemblik.

They remind me of the hammers in the Pink Floyd video - remember that?

Thank you Kanu, Pascal and Lucy.

Good God, yes Lucy, don't remind me of my age Wink. You have inspired me. I will go to the east of the Netherlands next time to photograph the 'ja knikkers' (yes nodders), which take gas out of our underworld. They so much more resemble the hammers. Makes you think what was really meant with that video.

We have a windfarm near us, and regard it as a positive addition to the landscape.
