You can never take good images at this focal length, I had the P900 and beyond 1000 mm it wasnt much use.

Looks great but I dont think there is enough in it to pay an extra £350 over the LX100. It still hasnt got a flip screen and i guess the continuous AF is still unreliable. Iíll probably get one after the initial feeding frenzy and subsequent price drop!

Actually Iím surprised it gets only 4/5 for value. Its got a great sensor, digic 8 firmware and 145 point dual pixel AF for the price of a lower level bridge camera !

The AF is the key feature, this is the perfect vlogging camera. Olympus has poor AF and Panasonics are hopeless! MFT lenses are becoming very expensive too. The M lenses are limited but you can adapt EF and EF-s lenses to the M50 giving a huge range to choose from with a thriving second hand market. At this price, you cant go wrong, I will buy it for definite.

The price is a bit steep for enthusiasts. I like it alot but its out of my price range, as others have said there is alot of good competition at this price, I canít see it selling well. Iíll wait for the price to fall... maybe.

Quote:Will reviewers please stop saying "large one inch sensor" !
There is NOTHING about this designation that is one inch.
The size of the sensor is 12mmx9mm just a little larger than the "standard" compact sensors atapp 6mmx5mm.
I have also see an "inch and a half" description! What ? BIGGER than full frame on a compact ?
When manufacturers allow this it is Fraudulent.

Yes but this is for historical reasons, the tubes were measured diagonally in inches but the useable portion was about 16mm. The diagonal of the useable portion of this sensor is ~16mm hence the 1" designation. It isn't really fraudulent because 1" doesnt mean anything either, it is the area of the sensor that matters. What really matters is that a 1" sensor camera produces outstanding images with pretty decent low light performance, even this is more a function of the photosite size as in the amazing A7s. I am pretty excited about this camera for having the best features including the additional optional EVF !

The 18-50 is going to be a winner, you have the perfect Vlogging camera, ultra wide lens, 180 degree flip screen with stabilisation and 4k video. The only thing missing is mic input, what a shame almost perfect.

This doesn't bother me but the GX8 crops to 2.7 If I recall correctly.

I have heard Natural is better from some much viewed YouTube vid Sanveer but this is not my experience. I am in a G7 user group and one of the members has provided a LUT to support Cine D. I am surprised it's not available but perhaps it's aimed at the rich mans p&s segment of the market.

  • Posted on: Panasonic Lumix GX80 Review

Are you sure Sanveer, I haven't seen any mention of Cine D one way or the other, only of an enhanced Venus Engine and dynamic range. Wrt to your second comment, dialing down can be a double edged sword, it will not have the same affect as adjusting gamma, but will on vibrant image output in my experience.

  • Posted on: Panasonic Lumix GX80 Review

I expect it is the same as the G7 except the moire maybe differen't, so to get flat as possible you would use Cine D, perhaps dial down contrast etc. I like Cine D but many complain about skin tones in particular but you can get LUT's to overcome these types of phemomena.

Just as I am contemplating a new lens, this comes along 😟 I like the EVF resolution and the size but its a shame they didn't stick with the GX8 sensor.... onwards and sideways !

Thanks Kawika, I guess deep down I know I don't really need it, most of my photography is using the 12-35 f2.8 and 14-140mm, I bought the G7 (before the GX8 was announced) and GX8 last year and I promised myself that would be it for a while ! I want to do more aviation photography from the ground, and so in a way I am inventing a need, but I would be racked with guilt delighting over my aviation close ups whilst my children walk to school with no shoes 😬

It's a whole lot more than the 100-300mm, do you think it is worth the extra for an amateur enthusiast?

  • Posted on: Panasonic Lumix GX8 Full Review

The 300mm is known to be poor, I have reviewed the images and they are noticeably soft. But I am talking about the 14-140mm, this is a sharp high quality lens, if a bit slow. I have stopped looking at DxO scores along time ago because they add no value to my decision making, the charts on this site are far more informative along with the reviews. This doesnt answer my question regarding the improved scores on the EM1 wich i speculate is subjective.

  • Posted on: Panasonic Lumix GX8 Full Review

Does it really drop that low, the overall score for the 35-100mm is 19. Don't get me wrong, the 14-140mm is my favourite long zoom lens, my point is, why the difference between using it on the EM1 and the GX8, because I can't see any perceivable difference between images taken on the EM1 and the GX7 or my new G7, which I would say was even better. Everybody on the forums picked on me for saying this, constantly supporting their criticisms with the fact that it was obviously going to better given it's superior Sony sensor, so I ask now, given the sensor turns out to be a Panasonic... what now? Is DxO more subjective than we think?

You might find that once you look through the EVF, you might be tempted ! The problem I see is that it is about the same price as the FZ1000 which is quite superb, I cannot see anybody buying this one.

  • Posted on: Panasonic Lumix G 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens Review

Just got this lens as part of a kit on the G7. It is sharp and the stabiliser does work very well, some are complaining that it is jittery but I have had a close look and I can't see any jitter, but switch OIS off and you can see clearly how effective it is. The only down side is that it is slow and not much use indoors without supporting light, the quality seems ok at ISO 3200 but AF is poor to hopeless so there is a need to go manual. For outdoors in day time, in most conditions it is perfect and has a very flexible range.

Walkerr, even DxO mark tend to produce better overall results for Panny lenses. But I cannot tell any difference at all. I had to laugh when chipsure took apart the EM-1 only to find it had a penny sensor, the forums were full of "experts" opining that the superior performance was due to the Sony sensor... now what?

Quote:Much as I like my GX7 (I passed on the EM1 due to mediocre video) I have to say that FoToEdge has a point. It is disconcerting to see that Panny lenses score much higher with DxOMark when used on Oly cameras. (For example, see the DxOMark review of the Lumix G VARIO 14-140mm /F3.5-5.6 ASPH.)
    Score with Olympus OM-D E-M1: 13
    Score with GX7: 10
I'm going to wait until DxOMark has tested with the GX8.

You see I am a little sceptical, these tests carried out were done at a time everybody thought the E-M1 contained a Sony sensor. When chipsure took it apart, they found out it was a Panasonic. I am struggling to understand how these marks can be so different. Tony Northrup advises DxO place too much emphasis on colour. Either way, both these scores are poor, and whilst I suppose it is handy to have a benchmark, for all practical purposes, we are in the realms of nitpickery. The choice between Panasonic and Olympus is about whether you do video and or whether your nerves can handle the frustration of operating the Olympus machines, last only to Fuji's.

I think it is worth the upgrade for 4k, IBIS, and the new sensor, if it turns out to be any good. The camera is still very small.

Well all MFT cameras are producing great quality now but I agree that the Lumix menus are the best, but I would choose Lumix over Olympus because if nothing else prices. I won't pay A7 prices for MFT, in fact I didn't and am happy with the A7. My G7 order hasn't arrived yet but i am excited about the 4k still modes, the fast AF "propaganda", and the fact that it uses the same engine as the GH4. If all that is true, I can see this replacing my LX100 as a carry around, maybe even the A7 due to its lousy AF performance ! I would like to adapt it to my Canon lenses if anybody knows whether the speedbooster fits well, I read they are only good with the "GH" series, can that be ?
