Princess Elizabeth

By morpheus1955
This is a sculpture of ‘The Princess Elizabeth’; the daughter of King Charles 1st, who was imprisoned in Carisbrooke Castle on the Island. Elizabeth died of consumption on the 8th September 1650 in Carisbrooke Castle, and she was interred beneath the Chancel of Newport Minster in an unmarked grave. In 1856 Queen Victoria erected this monument to her, “as a token of respect for her virtues, and of sympathy for her misfortunes”.

This is the first of a small set of images I will be uploading over the next couple of days, of this carving

Please look large if you have the time.

Thanks for all the C&C's always much appreciated.

Thanks for looking

Hugh

Sepia just seems so right...
Absolutely beautiful work, totally appropriate to the subject - you've made wonderful use of what looks like pretty tricky available light. Here it highlights the very graceful throat and shoulder.
Looking forward to more, photographing sculpture is a passion of mine, I've never tried Victorian sentimental work though I have a subject I keep meaning to visit.

Both versions are fine, Hugh; V1 in its natural state is perfecly sepia-toned Smile The historical background is interesting as Charles I's daughter tends to be neglected by modern authors.

As a history buff, you have me looking forward to seeing more and how I enjoyed your write-up. It has to be V1, the sepia giving an almost skin-like quality to this stunning sculpture.

Has to be V1 for me too Hugh, the tone so suits the image. The detail is amazing. The light and view feel as if we are stealing a glimpse of this sad memorial. Strong image.

V1 for me I think this for me as the bright areas seem to be a bit softer on the eyes which I think is a good thing...
Very nice work...
