Rising Damp

By Jasper87
Inle Lake, Burma again. When the original settlers moved down to the Lake from the North they were refused permission to build on the land, hence they built their dwellings in the Lake itself! Apparently there about 20,000 inhabitants here now. Restrictions have been lifted but dry land comes at a premium and the local villagers have devised a most ingenious way of growing food - floating gardens, kept in place with long sticks. I think this image is straight but shooting from a rocking boat plus the huts are anything but vertical...who knows!! Smile

Many thanks to Ann (EAS) and all that commented/voted on 'Prohibition' - seems like I got the order of upload incorrect Sad

What an experience to see all this for yourself, Dave, and even better then bringing home such wonderful images from this far off land.
Three superb images documenting the life and times of the villagers here, and I love V 3 with the to lads in what is just a boat and no more, but seems to serve the purpose.
A real insight into how they live, and I love that title too.
(PS........gosh, 38 votes and this set has only been posted for 2 hours, but not really surprising........R)
Three nice ones Dave I like V1 with the angle. The huts are a
bit off plum but that gives it originality to the picture with having the boat
as an entrance point. Well done. It has a personality and tells a story.
Well done. WesternRed.

Beautiful captures. I like each one for different reasons - the people in V3, the reflection in V2 and the 'nearly home' feel of V1. The clarity and colour of each is second to none. 'Perfect pictures' I think Smile

All three have their great merits and I'm not surprised you posted all of them. The colours in V1 are very eyecatching and the forced perspective of the boat really gives some dramatic depth. V2 shows just how rickety the structures are and as Ronnie pointed out, the human interest in V3 probably makes it the best of the bunch, shame one of the lads didn't look into the camera but you can't have everything. I expect like every tourist area, you stop looking at the foreigners, even the really odd-looking ones TongueGrin

I was telling my daughter just today, that I would live on an island in a house of sticks, don't need anything except food and water, must be my Burmese back-ground. I said to her if a storm knocks down my house, I'll pick up the sticks and re-build. My mother was born in Burma, she lived there during the war and said she only has wonderful childhood memories. She only left because she had an English back-ground and different religion. To stay in Burma, she had to become Buddhist - I guess its lucky she left. I will have to visit some day. Today, my girls and I love Tibetan Buddhism.
Your photo's are wonderful, I like V3 because of the canoe - its my way of thinking.
