European Goldfinch

By movingmountain
As I walked in the dunes nearby (with camera, tele and monopod) I met this beautiful bird. She did not move a bit when I approached and this gave me the opportunity to take a snapshot of this beautiful bird.

One of the most beautiful small birds and look even better in flight with that flash across the wing.

Great shot and can only echo all you said in your profile about being out there in nature.

More EXIF would help others. Not a snapshot, a very competent image of a very attractive garden bird. Others should look and learn, hence the need for more EXIF. Shutter speed, aperture, support?

Hi Paul,

You are right. I have put extra EXIF info to this pic.

Beautifully sharp and detailed, with nothing to obscure the subject or distract the viewer's attention. A very attractive portrait of one of the most spectacular of our finches, correctly identified as female, and there's nothing here that demands to be changed.

Excellent exposure and fine presentation. Good to see the bird perched on a natural roost and not a feed table or similar.

Very nice. I wonder why you hadnt stopped the lens down a little, but perhaps it was a quick shot.

Ive uploaded a mod.

From a quick look at your portfolio, Harold, I think this might be the first time you have ventured into the Critique Gallery. You have some excellent bird pictures there, and I am wondering if it was really your intention to upload this image here. If it was, it would be helpful to know what your reasons were for uploading here, for instance there might be something you particularly wanted comments on.

Anyway, since you are here, I have to agree with others inasmuch as this is a fine image of the goldfinch. You have a good clean background with no distractions, a strong front view of the bird, good colous and a nice little catchlight in its eye too. You have placed your subject nicely to the left of the frame, with space for it to look into, on the right. The area directly around the bird is clean and clear, showing its outline off beautifully.

Nevertheless, I have done a modification, which simply involves a bit of tidying up. It's not necessary, it's purely cosmetic, and is merely an offered suggestion.
I removed all of the out-of-focus branches from the background to give a good strong focused perch.
I cropped to place the bird on a thirds line and although I'd like to have got the eye on a thirds intersection, it wasn't possible without spoiling the whole of your composition.

It's a very decent shot.
There doies appear to be some aggressive sharpeniong applied, or perhaps Clarity as Willie's mod addresses this. I just wonder if you applied this heavily in post processing, or if it was camera settings. Do you have the original untouched file?

All that said, this would pick up votes in the main gallery and some may even give it their award..
