This so nearly works for me - the background which I believe/suspect is where it should be heading is not dominant enough - in PS try Image/adjustments/shadow highlight to balance it out

I like it as is because the focus is not on the Duomo but on the others houses. Works well.

I think that not having the street level in distracts: if it was portrait it would work for me, the fact that the background dome building is not the main subject is of little consequence. The mixture of shapes and tones are enough. Very nearly a really good image.

i appreciate all your constructive comments - thank you.

On the print version that I have the background is much stronger than seen here and the text on the building is also easier to read - perhaps the scan has made some adjustment.
Ive never adjusted a photograph digitally - so perhaps I will try that
