Hi Lexi,
Softboxes are the way to go for soft lighting. To get some light into your eyes, you could try clamshell lighting. A softbox placed slighly above you to put light into your eyes and a gold or silver reflector placed below (you can hold it in your lap) to reflect light back up into your face, removing any shadows.
Hopefully I have explained it reasonably well! lol

I do like the concept in this image, the model, the reflection and the shadow.
I think this image would work even more if the reflection was in a single piece of the mirror and there was separation between Tillie and her shadow.
