Now that we are allowed to meet up out of doors I am starting an occasional project, photographing the volunteers who have restored Prudhoe's West Road Cemetery.
I've told the story of this place before. Opened in 1870, it was always going to be too small for the town. A new cemetery was opened on the edge of the town in 1903, after that only burials in existing plots were allowed, and the C of E gave up maintaining the site some time after WW2. Nature took over, it became an impenetrable jungle.
Ray is one of the dedicated volunteers who have gradually tamed the site and brought it back into the community.
I have been meaning to photograph them for ages but lockdown intervened. I was prompted by Robert (clevercloggs)'s People of the Allotments series... Then I needed some photos for a local project, that was the spur. I have one more to come tomorrow and a further visit is lined up.
Thanks for looking,

Though no one had been buried here for almost thirty years, the grass was mown by yours truly. I felt a tidy graveyard made a happy graveyard...

Great project and it is good for the volunteers to know their hard work is appreciated and documented.

Excellent portrait and love the right hand grave stone just framing and tying everything together Moira.

A cause, well worth photographing. An awful lot of old cemeteries are just being left to be taken over by nature, so it is a good sign that volunteers are willing to wrest them back from neglect. More power to them!
Good character study.

There really are wonderful and caring people in the world. Ray is sure one of them. And he looks happy to do it. An excellent image and the cemetery is looking good.
