A Grand Day Out

By mrswoolybill
First of a little set from Ribblehead Viaduct.
We visited in gritty Yorkshire weather, which I rather enjoyed. That sky is for real, not fake HDR...
We were filling up vacant places on another U3A's trip. Waiting for the coach to take us to Settle, we were bemused by the smart polished shoes and lack of waterproofs around us - all was explained when we got to Ribblehead Station, everyone promptly disappeared into the pub. Apart from a group of hikers and some sheep, we had the viaduct to ourselves.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

A French friend of ours once bought a book called 'Short walks to English country pubs'. He was alarmed to find that they were all 7 km plus, he said that he regarded a short walk as being from the car park to the pub...
Thanks folks.

So, is Gromit photographing Wallace, or vice versa?
No doubt copious amounts of cheese were to be found in the pub, in the form of cheese & onion crisps, or cheese doodles...

Excellent POV and the sky is impressive Moira.

Glad to see you and Bill were not tempted by the lure of the pub. Better employed producing pictures like this!
Excellent framing of Bill and the viaduct and what a sky!

Lovely Yorkshire weather. Bracing and very photographically attractive.
You can get a drink anywhere, but you don't get views like this by sitting in a pub. Or the great fresh air.

Good idea to tie a sheep to the rails to stop the train at just the right time and place, Moira.
I guess Bill had some human inclusion in his shot too. The rocks in the foreground work very well. Must've done your back in, putting those into place. Wink

I was watching A Grand Day Out on TV a few days ago, for the umpteenth time, but that was Wallace & Gromit, not a Woolybill! 😁 Visited the viaduct way back in 1986 I think it was whilst on a Camera Club outing, but up in the area three Fridays ago, visiting the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes...had to buy to some real Wensleydale cheese, of course... 🧀😋 Love the composition, by the way...👍👍

They're not really that big. It's wonderful what a fish-eye will do...

That is a very fine example of the fish eyes capability. Not over done like some. Great foreground.

A very original view of the viaduct. A good use of the fish eye making Whernside in the background appear like a small pimple of a hill. An excellent capture Moira.

Oh yes, saved me from getting sheep droppings over myself and the coach.
Thanks folks.

Rather misses the point of going there.

Your title reminds me of the Wallace and Gromit film of that name, so to paraphrase one of their lines 'this viaduct tastes a bit like Wensleydale'. Though given the location the viaduct most likely does...

A very striking composition; glorious! SmileSmileSmile
