Now you see him, now you don't

Two takes, looking through the book shelves that divide my end of the room from Bill's... I guess this is evidence of various lockdown phenomena.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

This is easy the first is the winner due to Bill being in focus draws the eye into the image. The second draws the eye out and the eyes just don't go four ways at once. The brain can't handle it...

Great idea that has worked really well, not always the case.

Thanks Robert. My eye generally sees foreground blur as a barrier but I reckoned it works here.
On the other hand, Bill's hair at the moment is possibly better viewed blurred... Wink

I love the first one of Bill especially the out of focus books top and bottom. A bit like a scene from an old detective film!

A portrait of the genius at work...

...or...in a quiet David Attenborough voice,

"We have to be extremely careful not to disturb this very shy and easily frightened specimen in its lair. One small, sudden movement or noise would be enough to make him take flight, seeking safety in the more secure burrows of the downstairs lavatory..."

I agree with Robert regarding the books being a solid barrier in the version. I find it hard to see beyond them.

Wonderful images. I love the lead and the V, both tell you something about the subject (Bill). I would have swapped them round so as to make us wonder and think second to reveal Bill.😊

An excellent portrait of Bill, Moira and a good idea to switch the focus for a different perspective. (Including a book on 'The Greeks'.)Wink

An excellent exercise in focusing Moira. I love both of these images - but I think I will go for the lead despite Billís hair needing attention!!

Blimey! Just back from an excellent day out, walking round the grounds at Wallington. Now I have to settle down to catching up. (Or settle up to catching down... ) Thanks to - deep breath - Dave, Malc, Ollie, Ken, Alfie P, Alfie K, Leo, Daisy and John for their UAs. And thanks everyone.
The model is of course taking credit for this...

He clearly perfected the 'silent reading in class today' look...

The portrait for the expression on Bill's face: the version for the expression of bookishness at its best.

Oh - and the light. An overhead spot in just the right place. A few millimetres' movement by Bill would utterly alter the shot. So there's a lesson in timing here, for Those Who Would Take Portraits.

An interesting pair of mono images, the books are ones I once read when taking a university course in English literature and looks like he took the same course, unfortunately I didn't keep my books, also suggests he may be a writer working on writing a book. A great pair of images that tells/suggests a story.

The books are private passions, Francis. We both studied languages, most of the foreign language books went to Amnesty a few months ago, that does mean that we haven't got so many books piled on top of books ...

Interesting study on focus, my Fave is the lead, it tells a story and takes the beholder into the scene.
