When we dead awaken

By mrswoolybill
The crypt of St Peter's Church, Hythe, in Kent, houses a collection of over a thousand human skulls, neatly arranged in arched display bays. Further inside, the bones of maybe 2000 individuals are stacked in a sort of wall.
Nobody knows the origins of the bones. There are various far-fetched theories, including suggestions that they are the remains of soldiers who fell at the Battle of Hastings, or of a gang of pirates who were lynched. Most probably they were simply exhumed when the nave was extended in the 13th Century.
The crypt is actually almost at ground level, it is quite well lit and strangely welcoming, reassuring. The volunteers who look after the bones know them individually and treat them as old friends. The skulls have a very strong presence.
When I visited I stocked up on several years' worth of Halloween uploads...
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Do you think they could spare one for an aspiring still-lifer?

Quote: Poor Yorick vs rich Yorick

But the poor skull still has its teeth, even if they aren't gold ones!

Alas, I think they'd notice the gap...

Despite all our physical differences in life, we all look much the same in death.

I admit I've never known anyone whose best friend was a bone. Other than a couple of dogs, that is.
