IMHO...I this is a superb capture, the water globules remind me of inverted tears which seem to match your son's mood, I think this is a shot where no eye contact works well.
This image is sad, yet dynamic.

I must add i am more into art than photography and i think its a shame that many great photographic opportunities are missed for fear of breaking the rules!
