this was supposed to be a photo of me playing cards with myself, the room was dark, i sat in one chair and the self timer took a pic, then i sat in the other chair and the self timer took another pic....why do i appear as ghost images instead of solid and how can i get the effect i wanted?

Because the camera took two pictures of the room set, but only one of you...twice. Therefore your image has been weakened by the doubling up of the room and the furniture.
You obviously have a scanner, so use two seperate shots, scan them in and layer one over the the other in PS, then simply erase part of the top layer to reveal you in the second layer.
