A Happy Man

By Nick_w
Some may consider it clichéd be it the location, the mono etc (mentioning no names Ade Wink ), but Grosmont to me is about the people, the men and women who make it work, have a permanent smile on their face doing what they dreamed of all them years ago. This is what they dreamed of when they first saw the train go round that track on the living room carpet on Christmas day ca 1970.

On my recent trip I set myself a project to capture the guys in low light, convert to Black and White. The idea is for it to be viewed together, so I may get round to look at the gallery feature.

To compound matters, I can see far more trips to the NYMR, albeit a different station. At the weekend my best friend from School contacted me after almost exactly 30 years - he now lives in Goatland!!

I will use the Photography Choice Voting for the first time, but please if you leave a negative vote, please look at the large version first and then tell me what you dont like about it

Great image Nick - the backlight gives good accent to the central character, and there's good detail in the shadows too.
A very nice mono conversion also.

Do like the candid pose and the conversion Nick, but isn't the point of focus in front of the main subject and actually on the cab and not the bloke [who seems a little soft]? Not going to vote it down for that though.

Like the composition and conversion Nick, suits the subject well, do agree with Paul on the point of focus. But still think its a great mono image.

An excellent capture Nick, and a very nicely processed mono. Gets the green up arrow from me!

The candid moment captured is good Nick but regarding the sharp focus been on the engine is that because the steam / smoke is making the upper part of the main subject look softer, not sure still deserves the up arrow

Between them Paul & Les have a point, I did have probs gaining focus, just had a look there is another one with focus spot on but it needs more work so may have a look at that one. Tho in a large view of the Tiff there is sharpness beyond the guy. and theres a lot moresteam visible in front of him.

I get the point about the focus, but I'd like to have seen a version without the other guy in it. The strength for me is in the concentration of the main character. Anyhoo, it's a good shot... Dave
