The Last Post ...

By Nick_w
Before going into the blurb..

I was hoping to process a few images and catch up, but my wife & daughter are caught up in the travel chaos, so I'm trying to get insurance sorted for their extended stay, looking at coaches, trains ferrys etc, my daughter is in a bit of a state with the worry.

Whilst my wife & daughter were away I've been traveling a lot this week (before the problems), and its given me some great photo opportunities. Ive also tried a few different things, this been one.

This is something I've been practicing for a while, but this is the first one I'm happy with.

It was also the hardest set up I've ever had. In Staithes beck in pitch blackness, trying to focus wide open with a long lens, then getting the flash settings right trying not to trip over the ropes.

What I like (and I know not everyone will) is the bokeh and the shallow depth of field, this is exactly how I envisaged it. Very much as in camera - only a slight crop. (which I couldn't get round as I didn't want to get my feet any wetter than they already were).

The influence for this came from 2 EPZ members, one for the brilliant original from Martin.w(still one of my favorite EPZ images). Another came from an epz member asking me to look at some work on a.n.other site where strobist work is more prevalent.

Please look at the large version to get the full benefit of the DOF I was trying to achieve

Tech Details
FL = 135mm
Ap= F4
Shutter Speed= 15 sec
SB900 Camera right @14mm with diffuser at 1/16 power (rear curtain)

Oh and if your interested North is to the left, for fun let me know how you can tell. One of the reasons I uploaded the colour version first.

The DOF has worked to perfection here. You can "see" the bg subject so you get an idea of whats going on back there and then the post ignites a totally new image. Excellent. Paul

this is a really top shot Nick, you have obviously spent sometime thinking about this and setting it up. I remember you mentioning that you wanted to use a strobe in your landscapes and this has worked a treat. Top stuff mate

Cheers Dave, TBH I've done quite a few but none have made the grade till this week, when hopefully I will be uploading a few, tho this is the only one I think with the long lens, getting the balance right is the hardest bit - particularly as the CLS doesn't work too well with filters and high contrast scenes. I've ended up with ebay triggers and doing everything manually.

You've obviously thought about and planned this shot and its payed off well. The detail in the post is superb and the addition of the bg subtley out of focus just adds to the image no end. Well done on this and sorry to hear about your troubles too. PS, no idea why north is to the left !

Well, well worth the effort. A great image Nick. And do I win a prize for guessing its because there is light on the front right of the post caused by the setting sun in the west?

Sorry Dave, The light on the post was caused by my flash gun. The sun had long since disappeared. No its the Algae on the LHS of the post.
Cheers everyone for all the kind words.

Like it a lot Nick, wonder if you considered a post where the rope was connecting a distant boat, may not have been possible but could work as well.

John couldn't reply properly earlier as I was at work. I tried getting one fron the post the boat was attached to, but the composition didn't work die to the angle of the boat. I was restricted bybthe stream - the left tripod leg was in the fast running water, it was very dark so composing and getting focus was extremely difficult. I will have a look at the other raw to see if it works.

Beautiful light on the background boat Nick. I was hoping for somehting similar when I went to Staithes earlier this year, but the tide was well up in the creek, and couldn't get anywhere near this post.

Thanks everyone. Martin I had to wait till after dark for the tide to recede enough, hence the flash. If it had been light I would have tried a few hand held and cranked up the iso.

Cheers Ade just trying a different slant on a classic
