I was struggling yesterday to shoot bugs in my garden yesterday, mainly hoverflies and ladybirds which just kept on the move, thwarting most of my efforts to get a decent shot, when suddely this chap arrived. Looked like a hoverfly to my untrained eye, but it was at least 3 times bigger than any hoverfly I'd seen before. He was also less inclined to dart about, giving me the chance to get a few relatively decent shots. Could the entomologists amongst you confirm if he/she is indeed a hoverfly? Cheers,

looks like a hover fly in my book, possibly Volucella zonaria - but that bit's guessing

Lovely detailed shot, Nick. Much better than my recent effort. That settles it. I'm going to buy a Sigma 105mm macro for my Olympus E500; I think Clint above uses one too. Great shot.

Lovely shot, also like how you picked out the background colour for the frame, very nice touch.
