Introducing My Dad... And His Smartphone

I thought I'd take on some of my own advice this year and partake in a 52 photo challenge but I'm doing it with a slight twist as I'm involving my Dad. My Dad has always been an avid photography fan and now he has a smartphone with a great camera built-in, he's able to capture images on the go, straight from his pocket. He's also retired so just goes to show you don't have to be a young 'en to capture great images with a smartphone.

Here's his first instalment:

Many, many years ago I started taking photographs with an inexpensive Russian S.L.R camera where I had to use fast film to make up for what it lacked! When my family came along, I started using compact cameras but as technology has progressed so fast and so far, now I simply have to reach for my mobile phone. Plus, as I'm of retirement age, I find it's the easiest way for me to take photos (and encourage others of a similar age to try it, too).

I'm currently using a Google Pixel and I am looking forward to seeing how much the cameras in smartphones have improved and how easy they are to use. I'm also interested in apps for editing images and want to see how easy storing/sharing photographs on these types of devices are.

I plan on giving Nikita one image a week for the whole of 2022, along with a few words, to share here.

The first image is of a scene I actually first spotted 2-years ago, while spending the day at Cleethorpes. I've shared both images but with the Pixel, I was able to use an app to remove a few people that were distracting and crop the shot to create a far better image. I also made minor adjustments to the brightness/contrast in Snapseed (a great app by the way).

Another Day, Another Door...

Doors never lose interest, I have a large collection of images that feature all sorts of interesting entranceways. With this shot, the colours first grabbed my attention with the green door and orange frame really standing out on the street. The ol...

The Bell Tower

This church and its bell tower can be found in Tala square, Paphos, and it has a really lovely design (Saint Catherine Orthodox Church, in case you wanted its full name). I like the shapes in this crop with lines and curves creating interest. You c...

These Old Streets...

There are quite a few streets that can still be found in Cyprus like this one with its old-world charm and character. You can keep your high-rise buildings and shiny metal when you have bricks that look like this...

When the bell tolls...

It's important that we look in all directions when taking photos and by looking up, I spotted this bell tower reaching out of the tree. I love the simplicity of this with just the sky, tree and bell featuring in the frame.

Pretty Building

They have revamped a lot of old town in Paphos but this building still has some of its original charm about it. The red frames and shutters pop against the whitewash and there's also some interesting detail when you get up close.

Nice shot with great composition, however for me I would prefer the people in as it provides a sense of scale and the pool of water at the end of the break water adds interest, just a personal thought
