Beam me up

By pebbles
Antelope Canyon outside of Page, Arizona. This is a shot of a beam of light entering through a slit in the Canyon roof, not altered in any way, the colours are really like this.

It was a real ambition for a few years to go here, and you have to book a guide to take you on to Navajo Indian Reservation land. The tours are limited to a brief half hour and it has become very commercial. There are two canyons, upper and lower, this is taken in the upper one, which is reached over a dry river bed drive by landrover. Nothing prepares you for what you see, its surreal, awesome, and what with that and trying to get to grips with a new camera, its a wonder I got anything decent. But of course, this only means that I will have to go again !!!

A really good photo with descent composition. The best thing about it for me though are the colours which complement eachother beautifully.

Alethea, this looks like a stage set, just crying out to be photographed. I think you have done an excellent job of getting to grips with your 602, the focus and exposure look spot on to me.

Super shot.

Thanks again to everyone for the comments, really appreciate them.

You will see shots similar to this in magazines, as it is an extremely well photographed place.

As a point of interest when I was in Moab a little further north there was a guy with a shop full of his absolutely stunning photography, and he had photographed this place about 30 years ago, and do you know he and his pals used to keep its location a secret so as to keep it special and therefore their shots were more exclusive. Not so these days, its open to anyone who arranges a guide and pays a fee. It still does not stop it being a totally awesome place though.

Hi Alethea. Great shot.
The guy you mention with the gallery is Michael Fatali, one of the best landscape photographers in the world. Shoots 8x10". He used to sleep out on the reservation to catch the first light. Anyone who likes this shot will love his work. Wish I could get there too.

Hi Colin, you lucky thing, wish I was going again. We started off in Las Vegas, and took a round trip which took in all the National Parks, Zion, Bryce (which is just awesome), Arches, Monument Valley, Page, Lake Powell, Grand Canyon, and back to Las Vegas.

If you do get some time, Bryce is a must, I have never seen anything so amazing, apart from Antelope of course.

Good luck, hope you get some good shots.

Thanks guys.

To CB - yes you have to have an organised trip, this one was an hour long booking with a local guide. Cost was $20 per person. Worth every cent.
Upside is the guide knows the best time to catch the beams, midday is best. Downside is there are more than just your tour going through although they are spread about 15 minutes apart.

The drive is out of Page, there are a couple of different tours, e mail if you ever go and I will give you details. Drive is by closed Jeep over a very dry dusty river bed.

There are photographic day trips you can book, but no idea of cost of these. I understand from others that the trips are now shortened to 20 minutes in the Canyon and the price has gone up since last year.

Hi Demetreos, yes I looked it up when I was quite young, the name was chosen so that it was a name outside the usual family ones, to avoid any arguments !

Its very unusual here, I've only ever met 3 other people with the same name.

Glad you liked the Antelope Canyon shot.

It's very frustrating to know I've been so close to this place once, without knowing it existed. I may get there someday, though. Thanks for the encouragement!
