on the fly

By pablophotographer
Shot on the fly while changing trains.
My biggest worry was the possibility of the train leaving. The original and the different modifications are to be uploaded shortly. The final crop shows I missed the verticals but my attention was on the train. The phone might have not handled the amount of light at the background proficiently, I wonder which version you like and what you can do to improve any of them. Thank you!

Unfortunately the lighting was agaist you and te phone failed to manage it. you needed to expose for the highlight area and brighten the shadows later. I know some phones are capable of adjusted settings but I suspect few use them.

Minus exposure compensation would have been good - does your 'phone allow it?

Otherwise, I think Moira's mods sort the existing frame as far as is possible, short of impressionistic approaches like Nik Efex filters.

I typed a comment earlier and it's not here! From memory, I mainly described what I did in the mods, which was simply to run the two pictures through auto adjust in the Camera Raw filter, which reduced contrast and retrieved a bit of detail in the brightly lit areas. Then a bit of very gentle dodging and burning.

Plus - there's a nice sense of atmosphere, but I really would like to see some people on the platforms, to bring the scene to life.

The problem is the difference between the highlights and shadows and on auto it falls between two stools. Not sure if you can do the following on your phone. I would have probably set the exposure on the highlight and hoped to bring up details in shadows later in processing. My offering is adding an orange filter and the shadow & highlight tool in PS plus some judicious dodging and burning.

I prefer V2 and would reduce the haze.

Mod uploaded.

Thanks everyone. Mac, I do remember it nearly as bright, but it is good to see the hidden details too. 😊 The camera has a Manual mode that allows to play with EV and White Balance. But since I saw nobody on the platform I was convinced it was about to leave so left it on Intelligent Auto. I had my camera in my bag but I had to change trains too so I used the phone. The journey continues!
