cicindela campensis

By CarolG
My favourite early spring critter is Cicindela campestris, more commonly known as the green tiger beetle, and is a widespread species of tiger beetle. The elytra and thorax vary from light to dark green and the pattern also varies. They are sun-loving creatures and can fly rapidly, making a loud buzzing noise. They are found in sandy areas where the larvae dig burrows and ambush passing ants and other crawling insects. They run very fast, making them notoriously difficult to capture on camera. They are carnivorous, feeding on a variety of other invertebrates. Long sensory bristles spring from various parts of their bodies but these are very slender and only visible close up.

What an amazing creature. It looks as if it's made up of about four different types of insect/beetle. Super shots. I've never seen anything like it.

Superb captures of this gorgeous beetle, Carol! Wow. Vs 2 and 4 are fascinating for those mandibles and the hair Smile

The mention of sandy areas and digging burrows made me think of antlions. Which my brother and I found very fascinating when we were kids. On holiday in Malaysia there were antlion traps in the fine sand beneath our seaside chalet...with an antlion waiting under each trap for a poor ant to fall in. Nature is pretty amazing.
