Pine Hawk Moth Caterpillar 1

By pamelajean
The largest caterpillars in the British Isles are members of the Sphingidae, the hawk moth family.
Sphinx pinastri, the pine hawk moth, is also referred to scientifically as Hyloicus Pinastri.

It's a fairly nondescript greyish member of the hawk moths, but the larvae of this moth is more colourful than the grey-brown adult.

This caterpillar's food plants include the needles of Scots Pine, but occasionally Cedar of Lebanon, Swiss pine, Siberian pine, Maritime Pine and Norway Spruce.
The caterpillar can be found from late June to mid-September.

Many thanks for all the votes, views, splendid comments and most welcome awards for my rhododendronsSmile.

Pamela.
