    Exciting times for camera innovation.

Sony and Fuji both pushing the envelope.

If Sony can come up with the glass at the long end for the pro's, then things will get very interesting.

Time for Canon and Nikon to get their finger out.

This looks to be a real game changer. IQ looks superb, certainly better than the 50mp Canon. Bring it on Fuji.

The manual focus aspect is nothing to worry about. With focus peaking and magnification it should be straightforward. What did people do prior to autofocus? They did it manually.
Affording this monster? Well now that's another much bigger problem. Excellence like this comes at a price!

I was quite keen to try this software. But when I ran a demo of this software using my Sony A7R RAW files, wide dynamic scenes such as sunsets were rendered with terrible, huge blown halos. I couldn't seem to overcome this problem, so I abandoned plans to purchase the software.
I've found ACR's latest HDR implementation to be excellent, giving very natural looking results. To me, a lot of HDR software gives a signature look which can be quite artificial at times.

  • Posted on: Uncompressed 14 Bit RAW Capture Coming To Sony Alpha Cameras

This is great news as it will hopefully satisfy the more rabid pixel peepers who claim that Sony RAW files are unusable.

For the rest of us Sony users, I welcome the possibility of greater processing latitude and the opportunity to use the full RAW if I need it.

  • Posted on: Sony Alpha A7R Mark II Hands-On

Lots of improvements and upgrades. Slight extra weight but worth it for the in-body stablisation.
The new 5 series Canon looks to have some very interesting competition.

  • Posted on: Sony A7R II With Back Illuminated 35mm Full Frame Sensor

The A7rII builds on the success of the A7r.

It now looks like a truly complete high res camera.

Just hope they include non-compressed RAW as an option too.

Nikon will probably get the sensor soon.

As someone who has to retouch a lot of photos for a living I see a lot of terrible examples.

The techniques shown are very effective and fairly subtle. Unfortunately not everybody has 8 hours to devote to achieve this level of finish.

I would also recommend Phlearn's free frequency separation action on his website together with some of his other skin toning techniques.

When is anyone going to shine fibre optics at the camera in this way in real world situations?

Just completed a shoot where I was blasted with stage lights and never got a sniff of this problem.

Had no problems with so called limited battery life either and some of the other complaints levelled at the Sony.

I suppose you can find fault with anything if determined enough.

Getting the A7r with FE 35mm.
    Can't wait.

Bye bye Canon it was good whilst it lasted, but I now need a younger lighter model.

Hope these cameras kick start small/lighter full frame alternatives from the big two.
Lugging around big DSLRs/Lenses is a pain I am now relieved of.

    We shall see...

  • Posted on: New Way To Measure Perceived Sharpness Of Lenses

This kind of data will now be bandied about on web forums (usually stateside) as definitive evidence that one lens or camera is better than another.

The grass is always greener. That Nikon D800 is crushing everything and the charts don't lie.

So now I get Nikon fever and have to bin my Canon...

I think DxOMark has some use as a guide but the real acid test is to try the equipment for yourself before you buy and don't agonise too much over the specs.

After all, the camera can't walk out of the door and take that killer shot for you (not yet thank goodness).

  • Posted on: Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens Review

Obviously a quality lens, but the price is taking the piss. And no lens hood either. What are Canon marketing dept doing? It's the same with the new 24-70L IS which is 2000+ and at the same time they're discontinuing the older non IS lens at half the price.

Time was when Canon lenses were cheaper than their Nikon counterparts but Canon are getting greedy.

Half of me hopes Canon get killed by the D800 so that it forces them to get their act together on pricing.

  • Posted on: Nikon D800 Digital SLR User Review

The D800 will definitely be a game changer. You get one hell of a camera for the money.
As a Canon user, my biggest complaint is the paucity of trickle down features from the top end pro lines to the enthusiast cameras. Only now has the 5D series got a sophisticated focusing system and decent weather sealing. But where is the built-in wireless flash operation of the 7D? The pricing of the 5D3 is definitely way over the top too. If Canon pitched the price nearer it's predecessor, it would fly off the shelves.
It will be interesting following the fortunes of the D800 and 5D3 over the coming months.
