Symbol Of Friendship

By pamelajean
I wish to extend a big THANKYOU to Carol (CarolG), Robert (bobsblues), Lillian (Lillian), John (lifesnapper), Carole (Rolepics), Sue (snappersue), Mavis (Mavis) and mashwood10 (Pam) for favouring my pink roses with their User Awards.

“Hello you said the day we met
Handing me a yellow rose
You asked me out
And to your surprise
And to mine I said I'd go
I thought it so romantic
And I found you sweet and bold
Though we'd only met
I still said yes
To a single yellow rose”
Yellow Roses by Dolly Parton, first verse.

Yellow Roses have a shorter, albeit no less fascinating, history than other roses. It wasn't until around the 18th century that yellow roses were discovered growing naturally in parts of the Middle East. Prior to this, roses in cultivation predominantly existed in various shades of pink and to a lesser extent, white.

However, once the first yellow roses were introduced, their popularity quickly spread. New rose cross-breeding and hybridization techniques were being innovated which played an important role in the evolution of the yellow rose. One of the more compelling attributes of most roses is their sweet smelling fragrance. This was a trait that the first yellow roses did not share, and in fact, quite the opposite was true! In time however, as breeding and cultivation methods were refined, hybridizers were able to gradually phase in the more pleasing aroma that rose-lovers are accustomed to.

The meanings related to yellow roses has changed over the years. Throughout history, the color yellow has been closely associated with the sun, and so represents joy. Today, yellow roses bring to mind all of the sunny, cheerful feelings of warmth and happiness. In contrast to the romantic meanings attributed to other roses, the yellow rose is purely a symbol for friendship, which gives it a unique place in the pantheon of roses. Yellow roses can send the perfect message of appreciation and platonic love without the romantic subtext of other colors, an appreciative message that is not laced with hopes or hints of romantic notions.
Representing feelings of joy and delight, they are an ideal way to brighten someone's day who may be feeling down.

However, in Europe at the time of the introduction of these roses, the colour yellow carried much more negative overtones. Consequently, yellow roses were long used as a symbol for jealousy and dying love, especially during the early Victorian Period. A yellow rose could signify infidelity within a relationship, the waning of passion, dying love, a broken heart, or extreme betrayal. This analogy could be why yellow roses could also mean Farewell.

Pamela.

Glorious colours and tones and a lovely bg to go along with such beauties. Enjoyed your info too. Apparently it was the intro of yellow Roses which introduced the dreaded Black Spot to the UK which is not quite so good!

Another good narrative Pamela,
but no mention of Roy Rogers in the film The Yellow Rose of Texas ?
Not surprising really.
It would be more exciting watching yellow paint dry on the walls !!
A super shot.

Many years ago in Persia a King posted a decree that any one of his gardeners that could grow a blue Rose! would have the hand of his Daughter in Marriage! one young handsome gardener had fallen in love with the Princess and decided to win her hand in marriage come what may! he tried every thing he knew to produce a blue rose! but all failed. He set his mind to win her and crept to the garden and dyed a white rose bush blue!, in the morning gardeners ran to the king saying there are blue Roses in the garden! at this the king was delighted and proceeded to view them! magnificent he exclaimed! who grew them! I said the young man for I love your daughter! suddenly a tremendous thunderstorm happened which was unusual for the time of year, the roses began to drip blue dye and turn white! the King was Fuming to say the least! for this young man you will be executed! do you have a last request?, yes to be buried in this garden! and so it came about, a year later the Princess went to his grave and vowed her undying love for him, her tears fell on his grave and before her eyes sprang a rose bush covered in blue roses! she never married, hope you enjoyed my story, it is my story regards Leon, love your Rose's be they yellow, regards Leon.GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin P.S. I made this story up to sella prayer rug covered in blue roses, it soldWink

What a marvellously informative narative, Pamela, to accompany what is my favourite colour when it comes to roses.
The inclusion of buds in varying stages of opening gives a kind of time-lapse feel to the image.

MAUREEN & KEN: Thankyou so much for your User Awards.

LEON: I love your story, thankyou for sharing it. So sadSad!
I've just read an article about a blue rose having been developed, and it said that "a blue rose has long been synonymous with the unattainable, from signifying unrequited love in Chinese folklore to its Victorian era connotations of symbolising a quest for the impossible".
Beautiful shot Pamela. Love the colours and excellent detail. Great piece of work work.

Very beautiful yellow to orange roses and lovely worked b/g too.
I had heard of the Jealousy meaning, but not the nicer modern
thoughts of friendship. Interesting write-up.
I often think yellow is my favourite colour, but every rose has a beauty.
I'm looking forward to a root of 'Blue For You' being delivered to me soon.
