Fungi and flash

By Pete
I believe this is a first on ePHOTOzine. I'm a regular of the new Critique Buddy Challenges and this month's theme is light play. I've already submitted my entry, but the challenge had got me thinking about the use of flash and I thought I'd have a go at flash with fungi.

I started out using coloured gels on slave flashes and the results looked dreadful, this lead me to creating backlighting. Backlit flash of fungi.

This image is a combination of two shots - the backlit one and a front lit one. The results looked great on LCD, but were less exciting when I got home on the larger PC screen. So I had to do some Photoshop work to remove my hand etc.

Now I know what I'm doing my next attempts will be better prepared and better executed, but I am really pleased with this example, and I'm hopefully pushing boundaries to shroom photography.

No shroom was hurt in this process. I always shoot them in their natural location.

This works really well, and suits this fungi, done a mod to remove some of the fg and to make the fungi more prominent

Excellent- I think it would be equally good if it were cropped to concentrate on the lovely fungus.

I definitely prefer version 1! Though I do prefer the foreground (lower left) in version 2. Beautiful lighting and the fungi looks wonderful. I especially like the two threads of web which look to be holding it up - almost like a suspension bridge! Smile

I really like this, it was a great idea! There's something to be said for the crop in the mod, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary to crop it.

Pete, this has inspired me to try it with some Porcelain fungi - their translucence should provide some interesting effects (although their sliminess might hinder it!). I have been using my R1C1 kit mounted as a "ring flash" I will have a go demounted now I have seen the possibilities! ...but don't hold your breath for anything spectacular any time soon!

Well, as ever, I'm going to be awkward and say that I prefer something between the two. Grin I prefer a bit of detail in the background just to give it some context and help hold the image together. The flash has worked well here, give you some nice rim lighting, but a touch intense in places.

Beautiful shot, very inventive with the technique which has produced an eye catching result and I love the light on both the fungi and the web.
Maybe a shame that it's nearly central, but not sure you'd want to lose too much of the moss on the right.

But my big question - would you have awarded this an HC if someone else had posted it?

This is stunning. The light is wonderful and great to hear how you did it.
Have to disagree with Tim though. IMHO it has to be central to get that lovely symmetry with the web. The moss itself is a delight and it's good to see the 'habitat' and get a good séance of place.

It may not get an EC/HC but it gets an award from meSmile
