Makena Last Light

By PatrickSmith
It was a brief but spectacular light show on Little Beach in South Maui as I looked out towards Molokini and Kaho`olawe islands.

I enjoy photography in Hawaii because the constant trade winds almost guarantee clouds on one side of the island or the other. (Unlike California where I'm still waiting for the first rain since late February.)

So about an hour or two before sunset, I study the clouds and head out where they are the best. This beach is just over a spit of lava from Big Beach and offers nice views of the other side of maui and the island of Lanai too. The islet of Molokini to the right is shaped like a crescent moon with excellent diving and snorkeling on the inside.

1/4-second exposure @F16 with ND grads 0.9 + 0.75 angled from 9:30am-3:30pm
Parts of the sand and sky had to be desaturated a bit to retain detail.

Super capture Patrick. Just love those lit clouds under the main cloud base. Also the light reflecting on the wet sand, and the light catching the breaking wave to the left are great little details.

Yes Chant, The older more eroded part of Maui does look a bit like Kauai, especially the sand.

Excellent coastal view Patrick but have you noticed some odd purple splodges in the rhs sea, could be drops on filter or sun spots??. Sorry to be picky but once I noticed them I couldn't see them being part of the water.

Hi John,

The deep water is really a purplish-blue when the light hits it just right, so there is some of that, but I'll had to look again at the original raw file to see for sure.

Hi Patrick,
I love the golden grains of sand reflected under the wash of the waves as it slithers in over the rocks and around them giving a sheen to it like glass, amazingly beautiful and yet the terse water and the power show against the rocks and the two could not be more different yet beautiful in their own ways.Great tones, saturation and exposure, the sky and horizon are fantastic and the detail is the tops.Magical work as always.take care,AnnSmile

I just looked at this large and noticed some purple blotches in the ocean to the right hand side, what are these? all i can think is they might be water droplets on the filters but then they would be sharper at that aperture?

Terry, I did notice that some of the waves looked rather dark and rather purple-ish for a moment depending on how the light was hitting them, so I picked some of that up.
