Lancaster Series

Into the Night

The Lancaster, one of the many hundreds setting out from UK bases heads East away from the setting sun. Soon the light will go completely and the crew will be essentially alone in the night sky. Repeated night after night each crew would undertake similar missions until the magic number of 30 was attained, or, as was much more likely, statistics caught up with them and they joined the many hundreds of crews marked as ‘failed to return’. Perhaps the beautiful display of the setting sun will augur well for this time and the dawn will bring a safe return.

Wow. This is a stunning sight.

Soz for lack of knowledge, but is this Bomber a turbo prop or normal prop?

Either way i would have loved to have seen and heard it for real. Spectacular Aircraft and Spectacular photo.

Thanks for the commnet, Bernard, much appreciated. The Lancaster was standard prop piston engined - the redoubtable Rolls Royce Merlin.

Glad to raise some emotion, Chen, the old Lanc still works 70 yrs on!!
