Beady Eye

By paulbroad
The other Gull, with his rather out of focus mate. Different perspective I know, and a fairly standard image, but possibly worth discussion. Camera resting on handrail on which the guls were standing - longer end of focal length and wide aperture to get the restricted depth.

EOS 40D with 18/250 OS Sigma at about 200mm - 320mm. Aperture priority f6.3, ISO400 - shutter speed about 1/800.

Great composition. Very effective. (Almost like seeing the other cheek through a mirror? Smile)

The near gull is very sharp and clear and is well complemented by his o.o.focus friend. They both look so serious and are obviously interested in something -you've caught the moment really well.
I would perhaps remove the white blob near the forehead of the distant bird (mod), but it is a great image.

I like the comp Paul. Nice detail in the near bird. it could do with a wee bit of processing work perhaps. The back of the near bird is more in shadow which unfortunately coincides with the black post behind it. I have uploaded a mod where I have tried to balance out the exposure by dampening down the whites on the front just a little and lightening the back part of the bird. I used a curves adjustment - so it became a reverse s curve. I cloned out the blob Geoff mentions ( he has done the work in his mod too) plus I had a go at taking out the black post - not quite so successful - I'm sure you could do much better Smile

Best wishes

Thanks for mods - both good. That blob needs to go - really hadn't realised how noticeable it was. The cloning is not entirely successful as you say, Cath, but I think you are right - needs doing. Easier on the full size image.

I have noted comments occasionally that suggest pros need not use the critique gallery - I think everyone can learn because things change and this is a good testing grounds. I've been at this game 50 years as my info tells, and I'm still learning.

I like it. Th composition is nice, but I like the light on the birds more than anything else. Would have gone for lower ISO for more quality as 1/800 is ample to drop down. Shame about the obtrusive background.
