Small Owl

By paulbroad
Help! Can anyone tell me what this is - it's about Starling size and, I think an African or American Little Owl. The chap did tell me and I've forgotten. About the same size as a British Little Owl.

Other comments, of course, welcome.

Sorry, I can't help with the identification, Paul. If it's in a collection it could be just about anything.

Whatever it is it's a good photo. The feathers look slightly bedraggled which just adds to its charm. Lovely blurred background and the colours tone well with the bird. Eyes nice and bright and sharp. You have held the exposure well.

All in all a lovely photo

Best wishes

I know most of the common hawks and Owls, but this is a foreigner and I'm struggling. Not in my books that I can see. Thanks for general comments.

Well Paul, no wonder there hasn't been a mod on this as it is damn near perfect. Focus, lighting, DOF, pose and sharpness all spot on.
However, I have seen many portrait mods that place the prominent eye on the intersection of thirds and so I have tried this here by cropping right and adding canvas to the left. I also did a slight contrast boost to lift feather detail. I agree that a little more space on top would be beneficial.
Most certainly no better than your original but something slightly different to consider.
Let me know what you think. Well done, superb shot!

Yes, Phil, like the mod - does make for a more balanced portrait.

I like the mod. I agree with the adding of canvas and the cropping. I think that the light is a little harsh but good as it shows the feather detail well. Detail on the eyes and feathers is spot on. Nice work.
