The Rainbow Gambit.

By paulbroad
I must admit, this is old, but I scanned it from a 6x4.5 slide a couple of days ago and have cleaned it up, made a few adjustments to colour and tone and done a bit with the burn and dodge tools. Digital does make life easier.

This was shot on Fujichrome 100 with a Mamiya 1000S and is an in camera multiple exposure. About 5 exposures in all using the grid viewfinder screen to position them. Lit with flash, sometimes with coloured filters on the gun. Stars are holes in black card shot with star filter on camera. Very firm tripod of course.

All on our dining room table top. Must have been mad - about 2 hours work - could be done in minutes now. Anyway, rather different. What do you think?

An interesting and unusual picture. A kind of meeting of two games? Space invaders attacking chess men. The new against the old. Thanks for your explaination of how it was done.
Yes good image, takes those boring chess piece photos a big step forward.

A well done composite Paul. Perhaps a little over saturated on the Rook and Knight?

I'm really impressed, such a lot of work and patience, and the end result is quite striking. I like the way the black and white squares form a circular zig-zag pattern at the end of the "path", and the yellow knight is looking in the direction of the large starburst, which echoes its colour. Just the one facing in that direction gives the feeling that the other three are doing that, too. The yellow starburst's reflection looks good as well.

I like it Paul and well done to you for having the patience, not to mention the imagination, to carry it out.

Thanks all. Realise there is little to be done to improve it in the conventional sense. The chess board was actually also constructed with a piece of white A2 card and a marker pen - the perspective being drawn in. Must have been mad - would not now have the patience.

Only just seen this one, and love it theres something quite magical about it, very creative and it kind of adds to the image to know that it was taken with skill and patience, Its nice to know that the time spent making this image was on the photography side and not on the photoshop editing, as much as I love photoshop and probably couldn't manage without it now. when I did my first course in photography I did black and white photography using 35mm, medium and large format camera's and dark room processing. The image had to be set up exactly how you wanted it to turn out, you had to think more about the image and composition before taking the shot and I really enjoyed that and miss it to some extent although I do appreciate the ease of digital.
