St. Basils Cathedral. Red Square

By paulcr
St. BAsils Cathedral is situated right on Red square. Built by Ivan the terrible to commerate the capture of the Mongol stronghold of Kazan in 1561. He was so amazed by the structure that he had the architect blinded so he could never create anything like it again.

A great set of shots of this amazing place. I was once told that RED as in Red Square means beautiful and has nothing to do with the political regime. Do you know if this is correct. Andy

looked it up Andy, the name comes from the word "Krasny" meaning beautiful. The name dates from the 17th century.

Thanks Rich. Yeah weather was great. It snowed on the first day I was there. The rest of the time it was clear blue skies and about 12-14 deg. Yesterday it dropped to about 3 deg and snowed heavily again Smile

This cathedral is stunning, and obviously unique if the poor architect was blinded, good heavens. I enjoyed every one, don't have a favourite, but would love to see this for myself.

Brilliant images Paul. I really liked the close-up one of just the top of the onion dome.
