Weta 0645

The weta is a remarkable insect of which there are many species in N.Z though 16 are endangered. This is a "Tree Weta" which was under my gumboots when I found it. Glad it wasn't in them, as that can happen too. The giant weta is up to 4 inches in length not counting antennae and legs which are both very long. One giant weta filled with eggs weighed 70 g making it heavier than a sparrow.
