This was actually the reason why I started this was my son and his passion for football (american). This was my very first shot at his first game last year. So my goal is to take all the advice I get and have gotten and put it towards this year and have better photos. With new lenses and a little more knowledge I think I can start to hone this passion.

Now that he is in HS I have arranged with the school and coaches to photograpgh the football team throughout the season and have free range of the field. So I am looking forward to putting wide angle to use and getting up close to the action witht he big zoom lens.

You kept it with the feel of spped and action..

Yes, I agree that learning from shots like this will serve you in good stead for the future. This one is badly out of focus (the men and vehicle in the background are also out of focus, but a lot sharper than your subjects) and has detracted from your timing at capturing a great moment. It's also quite badly under-exposed. Again, shooting from your knees would have served you better.

Can't wait to see more of your shots.

Your shot settings look good on this one, speed and aperture are fine.

So if look closely at the image, you can see the man standing by the truck at the edge of the field is very sharply focused, while the players are not.

This suggests that the issue is the camera focused behind the players. This is also the casue of underexposre, as the point where the canera focused is also where its metered, so the man is exposed well in bright sunshine, while the players are under. Its likely you were following play with some panning as they crossed in front of you. You camera has an autofocus mode which is specifically designed for a situation like this. Its called AI Servo, and if you look at the AF menu, you will see Single Shot, AI, and AI Servo. It would usually be used in sports situations, and as you have set Sports Mode, its a good idea to engage this also.
Next time for these circumstances, set t to AI Servo, place the focus point (Use one and not nine, - this is also selectable), half press the shutter, follow the play and depress when you have you shot in the frame.
What the camera is doing is tracking the subject uner the focus point, and constantly adjusting focus as it moves, and will only lock focus at the instant you fully depress the shutter.

One thing that you will find different, - but its normal, - is that while in normal AF you will hear a sound when the folus is achieved, in AI Servo there no sound, - but its still working, You will get used to it.

Give it a try and load the results so we can see how you are doing.

Hope this helps,
