Youth Hostel

Photography and music are my two passions. I edited photography magazines for around 20 years and launched the UK's first digital imaging magazine. I founded ePHOTOzine and was owner / publisher until 2013. The photos in my portfolio are ones I like from shoots I do in any spare time I have.

Youth Hostel

Despite going way beyond my youth I've never stayed in a youth hostel...well that is until last weekend.
I joined a mate and his two kids in a trip to Wales and stopped at the Pen-Y-Pass Youth Hostel. It was surprisingly good. Enough room to relax, and a decent breakfast for a fiver. They even have a bar and local Welsh beers so I sampled a couple of those.

The reason for the trip was to climb Snowdon and I planned to take some photos. I'd only have time for quick snaps as none of the others are into photography and I'd be competing with the iphone grab the snap and go speed. That said I was able to squeeze a few moments in on the way up leaving me dragging behind on several occasions. And the weather wasn't all that good either. By the time we reached the top we were shroud in mist.

This was my favourite from the walk.

I like the way the sun is catching the face on the other side of the hill. It was the only spot of sunlight at that moment.

And this was us at the top

Both photos were taken using the Olympus OM-D and 9-18mm zoom.

We've always 'cheated' and caught the train UP. We have walked down though, that was bad enough! I found the large stones underfoot quite difficult to negotiate............I was so busy watching my feet I think I missed a lot of the stunning views. Though to be fair, they were just paving the paths, so it may be better now.

As for the mist at the top, we've only ever been up there once on a clear day - absolutely amazing!! There's always such a crowd up there though, and there's always someone who braves the cold by not wearing a coat! Wink (We've even seen folk wearing shorts and flip-flops!)

Ha, yes I wasn't cold so didn't wear a coat, but on the second day I got soaked and had to change tops at the cafe...and then I did wear my coat.
