Not messy at all, Al, The cracked ice makes such an interesting and strong lead in. Lovely sombre blue tones off-set by the touches of warm colour from the clouds and their reflection.

They floes look like plates of opaque glass tumbled on top of one another, Alan.
For myself, I'd say your composition is just fine as shown, rocks and all, and it is a striking cold image, and no doubt when you were there you felt even colder.
A very good landscape with the scene in the grip of winter.
Ronnie.

The composition is fine Al - the ice provides a good lead in - very good shot actually.
I'm always beating myself up about composition but you can only photograph what is there not you would like to be there. Wink

Love this Al i think the composition is great.....the fg with the ice breaking around the stones makes this shot for me and the beautiful bit of colour in the sky and its reflection balances the shot so well

Stunning image and perfect POV, Al - I love the ice cold atmosphere, the textures and tones and comp of this terrific image. Looks like we missed these sub zero temperatures by by a whisker when we visited in early March! Congratulations on your HC Smile

Superb lead-in here, well taken. Have you considered flipping this horizontally so the ice would move from left-to-right, rather than right-to-left? I think this would make this image even stronger as it would be more natural for the eye to explore the image by following a left-to-right lead-in, rather than one that goes from right-to-left. Unless of course you read from right-to-left, in which case the current approach would suit just perfectly. Given that most of EPZers are UK-based, I think it would be safe to assume a left-to-right reading approach is more predominant here, so a flipped variant might go down with the audience even better.

Regardless, I think this is superb whichever way you present it, my comment is merely aimed at trying to get even more of what's already a splendid shot. Well done! Smile

Thanks Alistair, I like your thinking! My difficulty with it would be the loch is so well known that it would look odd (at least to those who live around here!) if reversed. Your comments about reading the lead in from the left is very true. Smile

I see - didn't think of the familiarity issue as, as you can see, I'm not from the UK but from Malta. To my eyes, in fact, the scene would look no strange either way it was oriented, but you make a good point that people familiar with it might realise it's been flipped horizontally. Either way, I reiterate that I like this no matter which way the leading line goes. Smile
