Crib Goch

By pfheyes
Consider this a work-in-progress. I've been meaning to get a shot of the ridge for some time, and this morning I dragged myself up to get this image.

For me, it's not the image I was hoping to get. The light was too hazy, the sky was cloud-free, and there isn't much drama in the lighting for me. It's a bit plain for my tastes.

I plan to do a return trip in the Autumn (when I get a day pass!) to have another go and see if I can get closer to the picture I've got in my head. I don't seem to get on very well with Snowdonia when it comes to photography. Sad

I love Crib Goch though. I've been on some pretty scary ridges, but this one still gets me acting like a ninny as I shuffle along the edge. It might not be technically difficult, but it's one hell of a drop ....

Thanks got looking,

Pete

Oh yeah, I'd appreciate any feedback on the toning for this. I think it may look overly dark. Thanks!

Very scary looking location, rather you than me. It looks OK to me, not dark at all.

Thanks Simon.

I've just noticed a black line to the right of the image, must have slipped with the pencil tool - argh. Oh well, I'm going go leave it for a bit and I'm not deleting it!

Thanks Andy - it roughly took me an hour and a half to get to this point. It was hard work this morning too!

Return in the autumn? Which autumn??? This one of your stupid o'clock starts again I think Mr H, can't make out the usual queue, or did you have to do a massive amount of cloning to remove the hordes of your fellow countrymen that despoil our hills these days!

Gwyn

BTW...nice shot.

Yeah Gwyn - when baby arrives I think I will have to write a 25 page business case on why I should be allowed on Crib Goch again.

You're absolutely right about the start - this was taken at 8am. I was the first on the ridge, and I only saw a couple of lads while I was on it. On the way down, I could see the traffic jam building ....

Thanks

It's an absolutely stunning view, Pete, but I'm one of these people who would simply freeze in such a situation. If my life depended on it I just couldn't possibly walk that ridge!

Treated myself to a new laptop this week, Pete. Yet to calibrate the monitor but this looks fine. Nice to see a bit of sunshine after your snowy Lakeland shots.

Hard to be a photographer, disappointed that it's clear sky. The colours on the ridge is really great.

Nice Light and tones. Good work.
Unusual to see a clear sky.....
It is a great place to walk.

I have a black and white shot from almost the same position. I'll have to dig it out and post.

Great pic. I'd love to do this ridge but I'm not sure I have the nerve. Does it stay (relatively) easy on the left side as we look for the whole length?

Thanks all.

Hi Peter - the most severe drop is on the right, so if walking on the crest seems like too much, you can place your boots on the slope on the left, using the crest as a handhold. The most exposed part is at the start of the ridge, once you get to the pinnacles the terrain involves more scrambling, but the exposure is less sensational. In addition, you encounter a path to the left of the pinnacles in places, so you don't have to scramble all the way. For me, the bit of the ridge you see in the foreground, is the trouser-filling bit.

Hope this helps!

Pete, this is the one ridge I have actually been over. Both me and my friend clung like glue while shuffling across. Luckily it was misty, so we couldn't see all the way down! If you get a better shot in the autumn I would love a print, just to show people how stupid I really was!

I agree, Peter, that's why this game can be equally frustrating and rewarding. I've had days where I've come back with half-a-dozen images that I'm really happy with, other days .... nothing! Smile

Deserves a click just for getting a shot this good up there. Shame about the haze but it dosnt spoil it much as the could do. The colours, detail and composition are excellent.

Wow! This is a fantastic shot of Crib Goch. Its a long slog up a big hill to get there so early in the morning. You've been fortunate to catch it in such good conditions - I'm still waiting for a day when its not shrouded in fog (though it makes the drop seem less intimidating!) Admitedly it would also look good with some angry clouds but I think this shot works well - I like the warm tones on the forground ridge. Maybe the shadows are a little dark - I feel I want to see a little more.

This is stunning Pete, I wouldnt worry about the slight haze in the background, I think it adds to the sense of depth with the brilliant light and deep shadow in the foreground. I like the clean blue sky too, I think it adds to the simple form of the image.
