Cwm Idwal and Pen yr Ole Wen

By pfheyes
This image was taken yesterday after an energy-sapping yomp over Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach in Snowdonia National Park. In the morning, the mountain tops were covered by cloud and, despite the forecast, I didn't hold much hope for any photography. It was a great hike, regardless.

Eventually the clouds started to lift as I descended Glyder Fawr and, even better, sunlight was starting to break through the clouds. This image was taken near to Devil's Kitchen, overlooking Llyn Idwal, with Pen Yr Ole Wen and the rest of the Carneddau mountains in the distance.

I opted for a central composition of the Pen Yr Ole Wen, and allowed the snow covered slopes in the foreground to frame the shot. I tried a few 'off centre' compositions, but they didn't work as well as this one.

I have done a few minor tweaks using curves in RAW conversion and I pulled back the brightness of the foreground a little bit to allow more snow detail to be visible and to prevent it from distracting from the rest of the shot. I tried a few images without the snow foreground and, again, I didn't think it worked as well as this version.

Thanks for looking - this one really is best viewed large if you can.

Every once in a while an image comes along that rocks you on your heels. This one did it for me Pete, tremendous composition the snow in the fg holds the image together, but the light on the top is just perfect, must have lifted your heart when this appeared.
Well done always makes a day better when you see something like this.

All the very best

This is indeed a majestic image Pete! the line of snow at the bottom balances the image well and all the various diagonals and the light on the far hills make it spring from the screen... This is another of your shots where I can feel the wind on my face looking at it!
